YLB ScoreThe checks, explained › Part I, Can people find you?

How quickly your site answers the first knock

When a browser asks for your homepage, there is a pause before anything arrives. We measure that pause once, from one connection, so it is a hint rather than a verdict. If your pages really are slow, visitors on a phone feel it and some give up.

A speed test made for the purpose measures this properly, and it is free.

How to fix it

  1. Switch on page caching in your website software, or ask your host to.
  2. Put a free content network in front of the site; it also adds a firewall.
The technical version, for your web person

TTFB. One round trip including any redirect and the whole body, measured from our machine. Under 0.6 s earns the mark, under 1.2 s half.

What the check reads. Wall-clock time for a single requests.get() call — includes DNS lookup, TCP+TLS handshake, every redirect hop, and the full body download, timed client-side. Internally mislabelled 'ttfb'.

This is one of the checks in a YLB Score report. Every report is free, read by a person before it goes out, and written so that you can act on it without us. Ask for yours.
