The padlock

The padlock in the address bar means the connection between the visitor and your site is private. Without it, browsers print 'Not secure' beside your name, and search engines rank the site lower.

Every host offers this free now. If yours does not, that is worth knowing about your host.

Open your site and look at the address bar. A padlock, or the absence of a warning, is what you want.

How to fix it

  1. Ask your host to switch on the certificate; it is free almost everywhere.
  2. Have every old address redirect to the secure one.
The technical version, for your web person

HTTPS. The final URL after redirects begins https://. A site that does not is also capped at grade F, whatever else it scores.

What the check reads. Whether the final response URL, after following redirects, begins with https://.
