YLB ScoreThe checks, explained › Part I, Can people find you?

Your page title is missing or an odd length

The title is the line a search engine shows in blue for your page. Too short and it says nothing; too long and it gets cut off mid-sentence; missing and the search engine writes its own, usually worse, version.

The right title says who you are and what you do in about ten words.

See for yourself

Search for your business name and read the blue line. Or hover over your browser tab: that is the title.

How to fix it

  1. Write a title of between ten and sixty-five characters: your trade, your town, your name.
  2. Give each page its own; the homepage title should not be reused everywhere.
The technical version, for your web person

<title>. We read the <title> element and award full marks between 10 and 65 characters, half marks outside that range, none when absent.

What the check reads. <title> text length: 2pts for 10-65 chars, 1pt (no finding) for present-but-wrong-length, 0 with a HIGH finding if missing entirely.
