No description for the search results

Under the blue title in a search result there are two lines of grey text. You are allowed to write them. If you do not, the search engine picks a sentence from your page, and it is rarely the one you would choose.

Two honest sentences that say what you do and for whom are enough.

See for yourself

Search for your business and read the grey lines under your result. If they are a random sentence from your page, you have not written one.

How to fix it

  1. Write about 150 characters: what you do, where, and one reason to choose you.
  2. Have your web person add it as the page description; every website tool has a box for it.
The technical version, for your web person

meta description. A <meta name="description"> in the page head with non-empty content. Not a ranking factor in itself; it decides what the snippet says.

What the check reads. meta[name=description] content attribute is present.

This is one of the checks in a YLB Score report. Every report is free, read by a person before it goes out, and written so that you can act on it without us. Ask for yours.
