YLB Score › The checks, explained › Part II, Will their message reach you?
Clicking your email address tries to phone it
The email address on your website is wired as a phone link. Tap it on a phone and the phone tries to dial the address, fails, and the visitor gives up. Nobody tells you, and it happens every day.
It is a five-minute fix, and it does not cost you points, because a score is not the point. Enquiries are.

See for yourself
Open your site on a phone and tap the email address. It should open a new email, not the dialler.
How to fix it
- Change the link on the address from a phone link to an email link, on every page it appears.
- While there, make the phone number a proper phone link.
The technical version, for your web person
tel: versus mailto:. An <a href="tel:"> whose target or text is an email address. Detected on the attribute, not the visible text, because some services rewrite the text.
What the check reads. An <a href=tel:...> whose href or visible text also contains an email address — i.e. mailto: and tel: swapped.
This is one of the checks in a YLB Score report. Every report is free, read by a person before it goes out, and written so that you can act on it without us. Ask for yours.
